Going Public...
I really have not liked having my blog private.... I feel like such a hypocrite! I LOVE checking out what people whom I loosely know (through a friend or whatever) are up to-- I'm nosey *grin* and I've actually stumbled across some good ideas that way... I also didn't like that some 'long lost friend' couldn't find me- since I've actually found a few through blog links- it's amazing how small the blogging world is and who knows who that you already know... okay so that last sentence didn't make any sense, but it's the whole six degrees of separation thing- sort of...
ANYWHO!! So I was reading on my friend Adri's blog and her post about being worried about blog privacy and maybe going private had some great comments that I have implemented and feel much better now about being public again....
I've also added sitemeter so if I don't like who is looking at my blog I can go private again, and also removed the nav bar because the 'next blog>>' link is truly AWFUL!! If you're fortunate enough to have never clicked on this, DON'T DO IT!! Just search in blogger for 'how to remove nav bar' and follow the instructions... it took me a while, but it finally worked and I'm VERY glad to not have that at the top of my page anymore!!
I can hardly believe tomorrow is Christmas Eve- what a magical time of year- Much love to all!

Pictures with Santa
Open Wide!
My sister Kim and her girls came over for lunch the other day. Natalie (6 months older than Dallin) is such a little mommy- she fed Dallin (and herself) his mac 'n cheese and did a pretty good job! Dallin loved every minute of it- he and Natalie have so much fun with each other... they usually just run around in circles chasing each other.
Bryson's First Christmas 'Concert'
Monday night was Bryson's preschool Christmas Concert... I use the term 'concert' very loosely... It was precious and adorable and a mess all at once *grin* He had so much fun learning the songs for this and often would just belt out 'hallelujah, Jesus is born' out of nowhere- he had SO much fun being in front of everyone and took a bow after almost every song (he was the only one). Surprisingly, Dallin sat still on Aunt Emily's lap the entire time.

For the Woodpecker Song (??) each of the kids got 2 sticks to hit together to the song... bad idea with kids standing close together on risers.... Bryson was in the back row and unfortunately a little too eager with the sticks and unknowingly kept whacking the poor little boy with the white shirt and vest in front of him... about 1/2 way through the song, the boy in front broke out in tears and wasn't the same the rest of the night... Bryson was oblivious.
PS- he's not that short... he was crouching down in excitement...

Little Performer
After the concert, he just couldn't get enough of the performing.... here's two of the songs they did. Oh, and to translate, the first song is his favorite--
"Hallelujah, hallelujah, Jesus is born today" - repeated several times and then "Yee-haw" (??) That's how it actually went in the concert too!

Fixed the problem....
So I'd been having problems not seeing pictures as I was posting.... it's fixed *grin* And it could've been fixed a lot sooner if I had just gone and sought help from blogger earlier- it took all of 2 minutes once I clicked on the 'help' button- I just needed to change my 'compose mode' under settings and basic to 'yes' Don't know why it ever got changed to 'no' in the first place, but I'm glad it's fixed!!

Bryson the Photographer
I think Bryson has some photograhic aspirations... he LOVES to play with my camera- so much so, that I got him one of those kid-proof digital cameras for Christmas... but I brought it back after I did a little research online- it only had 0.3 mega pixels! Sure, it's for kids, but if 1 picture out of 200 (or 2000) turns out a keeper, I want to be able to print it bigger than a postage stamp! So his photographer dreams will have to be stifled a bit by my restrictions on his use of my camera... Here is a sampling of his photographic genius *grin*
Issues with posting...
So is anyone else having posting issues? It used to actually show the picture that was going to post on my posting/edit page as I would add them and type up my blurb, but now it just shows something like this:
'a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_XVshZRrvyLo/R1cr2eCqJUI/AAAAAAAAASc/P_W9

It is driving me crazy!! I figured it was just blogger and that they were working out kinks, but it's been too long now.... any ideas anyone? Am I alone in this??

SNOW!!
Nothing beats the first snow of the year- Bryson was SO excited to get out and play in it... Aunt Emily promptly taught him how to throw snowballs (which got him into trouble at preschool) and he proceeded in pelting Dallin with snowballs when I had finally sufficiently bundled Dallin up to go out...
Needless to say, Dallin was a little slower to warm up to the snow as a result!
He preferred walking along the porch and going up and down the front steps...
Aunt Emily was so much fun to play with in the snow... a little more nimble than mommy at the moment.
Daddy came home with a sled that is Bryson's new favorite way to get around... too bad the snow is all gone now- it stuck around for almost a week though! Bryson kept saying that the snow was 'drying up' as it rained torentially...
C is for Cookie
Gingerbread Houses!
So the other night we were at Costco and they had these great gingerbread house kits... I thought it would be a fun family project *grin* I realized very quickly after getting home that I didn't have it in me for my wonderful 3 1/2 year old 'helper' to add his creative touches to this potentially lavish home.... So a quick trip to the grocery store later and we had a little milk carton and some graham crackers for Bryson's own gingerbread house.... I know, I'm terrible! But he had tons of fun decorating his own house (that more resembles an outhouse because they only had pint sized milk cartons) than having me freak out and fix everything on my gingerbread dream house.
Bryson was SO proud of his creation... he brought it for show and tell at preschool and even let all the kids take a piece of candy from it.
The finished product three hours later... meanwhile, Daddy and Aunt Emily had thoroughly played with the boys, bathed them and gotten them all ready for bed... so perfection takes a while, right?!?!

25 weeks...
So here's my belly at 25 weeks- I've had some people asking me the details (*gasp* your world isn't revolving around me??) I'm due February 28th, No, we don't know if the baby is a boy or girl *grin* Bryson's prediction changes daily- Even though I'm already pretty uncomfortable, I'm being very patient with this one because the thought of 3 is a liiiiittle overwhelming to me... No ideas on names... suggestions would be appreciated!!

Happy Birthday Karlie
*WARNING*WARNING* Karlie, I know you can't even read yet, but just in case, don't read below or you'll ruin your birthday surprise!!
Bryson and I went to Target to pick out a birthday present for his cousin Karlie's 4th birthday-- he finally decided on a Polly Pocket and was SOOOO excited to give it to her... unfortunately, her party wasn't for a few more days. Today though, Nathan and I were upstairs and when we came downstairs, this is what we found...

Bryson had gone down into the basement, found some cute wrapping paper, climbed on the counter (which is a no-no) to get his 'big boy scissors' and rummaged through the junk drawer to find tape and wrapped her present all by himself-- one of those moments that you just want to squeeze them cause they're so darn cute...

I love to sweep-
Ever since I posted about my sweet brother Dan surprising us with Christmas lights, I've been meaning to take a picture of this...

It's a vac-pan, and aside from indoor plumbing and electricity, it is the GREATEST invention EVER!! My oldest brother Perry insisted on installing central vac in my house as it was being built... it was his 'house warming' gift to us... pretty nice, considering that to have someone install it would have been 1000's of dollars and we NEVER would have done it... anyway, so I slide the little lever on it to the right with my foot and it turns on the suction and I sweep right into it.... handy when your three year old ends up with more crumbs from his pb&j on the floor than what ends up in his belly- that child is the messiest eater!! No matter, I just sweep those pesky crumbs right up, thanks to my vac-pan!! And my genius brother installed one on each side of the kitchen counter so I don't have to sweep a big pile around to the other side- and one in my bathroom to sweep up hair- I LOVE IT! THANKS PERRY!

Extreme Makeover-Cotton Home Edition
So in an effort to make the houses in our neighborhood 'more affordable' (*ha*ha*) the base price of our house did NOT include the 1/2 bath off the family room coming finished... of course we could have paid $3500 for the construction company to finish it for us, but we were cheap and knew we could do for a whole lot less AND Nathan wanted the experience (and power tools) needed to complete the job... There was a laundry list of more important things on Nathan's to do list when we first moved in, but over the last few months, the bathroom moved up in priority as I grew tired of hiking up the stairs every time I had to potty- which is becoming more and more frequent these days... I'll have to post a picture of my growing belly- later...

So unfortunately, I didn't get a true 'before' picture.... imagine white walls, concrete floor and pipes coming out of the wall. Initially when we went to Lowe's to buy everything, I distinctly remember us both asking what in the WORLD we were doing... especially when it came to all the plumbing fittings...

The finished product.... I am so proud of my husband! He did all the work (minus the painting and cutting the flooring- that was my contribution).

Doesn't it look amazing?? I am sure impressed with Nathan's abilities... it took less than two weeks from the time we actually got serious until we finished, and boy, my bladder is glad- actually, I guess it's my legs that are glad *grin*

Blue eyes... my baby's got blue eyes...
So the ongoing saga with Dallin... this kid is drama *grin*
So most kids are born with eyes that aren't coordinated, but after six months, he still had googlie (as we lovingly called it) eyes...

This picture was taken at Christmas, he was 6 1/2 months old.... eyes in full googlie action.

First, the ophthalmologist had us patch his eyes for a few hours each day....

Then we tried glasses... that was fun with an eight month old...

Finally, surgery when he was ten months old to correct the complete lack of coordination- these were his poor little post-op swollen eyes...
The surgery was so successful (in my opinion) that I hardly ever think about it anymore because his eyes look so good- I'd probably forget all together if it weren't for my family asking how he's doing or the periodic check-ups with the ophthalmologist- oh, or every time I get out my scrap booking stuff and look at any picture from the first ten months of his life... poor kid. Anywho, another check up last Thursday, and the doc was so pleased, we don't have to go back for TWO YEARS!!! WAHOO!!

Say Cheese!
Christmas in October
So last Monday night (October 29th), as we were headed off to a friends house, I could've sworn I saw my brother Dan's truck parked a block from my house.... his truck is pretty recognizable because he has a rack on the top with extension ladders- this time of the year he hangs Christmas lights as a side business, hence the ladders. Anyway, I thought maybe he was in the neighborhood doing a bid and was planning on stopping by our house after, so I called him, but he was at home... he joked that maybe he'd better check out front to make sure his truck was still there! Anyway, a few hours later, as we turned onto our little road, our house was lit up with Christmas lights! It is so beautiful! Bryson was amazed- he got out of the car and ran back out to the driveway jumping up and down he was SO excited-- he then started spinning around in circles with his arms stretched out singing a song about the lights. Obviously it had been Dan parked there, waiting for us to leave (he'd had my dad call earlier to see what our plans for the night were). My neighbor asked me what the 'deal' was with our lights, because she had seen him racing like mad, running up and down the ladder and such to get the lights done... what a great brother! He wanted it to be such a surprise- and it was! I just can't wait for a few more weeks so we can turn them on!

Update...
After several rechecks of Dallins hemoglobin, he's back to his normal (but still low *sigh*) levels... he's such a trooper- at the last blood draw he just played with his shoe the whole time. So for now, we're done with frequent checks... at least until he pulls another stunt like the other night!

hAPpy HaLLoWEen!!
Since we got his costume a few weeks ago, Bryson has asked nearly everyday if it was Halloween yet.... We never ended up getting a cowboy hat, but I think he pulls it off *grin* He was even more excited when he realized Halloween entails getting tons of candy with no strings attached... never mind that I've already given away most of the candy he got!
Dallin actually did really good in his costume... He knew how cute he was and hammed it up.
My parents ward had an amazing trick or treat the night before Halloween so we crashed it... it was so fun- each family decorated a doorway or room... Bryson loved the 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' room-- I didn't get a picture of the Oompa Loompa unfortunately, he was PERFECT!
Can't you just feel how scary Halloween is from Bryson's face?? Note the pumpkin Nathan carved...

Homemade Halloween
We had our church 'adult' Halloween party tonight, costumes encouraged, mind you- Nathan had come up with the idea that I be an oven (with a bun in it) and he be the Baker... so I took the idea and ran with it! With some help from Nathan's sister Emily we ended up with a great costume... I am the most proud of Nathan's chef's hat, I hand folded all the pleats and it looked great! My 'oven' was a box I spray painted black, embellished with some burners and such, cut the back out of so my belly could fit in to it, and taped a picture of a sticky bun on my shirt.... It was a fun little project...
A Little Lesson on Spherocytosis

For those who don't know, when Dallin was born and ended up in the NICU for a week, it was due to a blood disorder called 'spherocytosis.' He has abnormally round red blood cells (instead of the normal 'bi-concave disk' shown to the left). These abnormally shaped cells are mistaken by the spleen as being old and damaged and thus constantly breaks them down... Dallin is chronically anemic because of this, though he doesn't show the symptoms most people would typically exhibit (ie: lethargy, headache, dizziness) because that's just how he always is and his body has adjusted... it's called 'functional anemia.'
A complication that arises with spherocytosis occurs when Dallin gets sick. He depends on his body constantly making new red blood cells at a much higher rate than normal- this is measured by the reticulocyte count or 'retic' count- a reticuloctye is an immature red blood cell. When his body is stressed with an infection, particularly viral infections, he generally will stop 'reticking' so rapidly in order to fight the infection. There is a corresponding drop in his red blood cell count and, depending on how low his h&h gets, he could need a blood transfusion. So there is your crash course in the pathology of spherocytosis.
Anywho, so just before we moved from Kentucky, I brought Dallin to his hematologist (blood doctor) and his hemoglobin (red blood cell) level was 10.4 (normal would be somewhere 14-16) and I was very happy because that was the highest it had ever been.
The whole reason I'm sharing this is because of recent events... Wednesday afternoon I had an OB check-up (everything looks good) and while I was gone, daddy put Dallin down for a nap around 1pm... at 5:30pm, we finally woke the child up- it was almost dinner time! I was hoping he was going through a growth spurt, but he hardly touched his dinner. By his 8pm bedtime, he was yawning and fussy and leaning for his crib! And then he slept ALL night- I was sure he'd be up at 4am, ready to go. The next day he acted fine, took another marathon nap in the afternoon, but woke up as I was making dinner. I brought him downstairs and put him on the floor between the kitchen and family room where he sat still, staring into space for the next 15 minutes... when dinner was ready, I put him into his highchair where he proceeded to lounge back and take NO interest in his [delicious, if I may add] dinner... when we were all finished and he still hadn't taken a bite despite my coaxing, I got out some goldfish crackers to see if he just didn't like my pasta- he ate one and then refused any more. He just sat in his highchair with his eyes half closed, yawning and tired as if he hadn't slept in days. When I picked him up, he was SO hot, so I took his temp and it was 102.3 under his arm, so really 103.3-- wow! I gave him some motrin and started worrying... he was so lethargic and yet pulling at his ear which made me quite certain that he had an ear infection, but I was equally concerned about his hemoglobin level that could also be adding to his lethargy... So I called urgent care to see if they could do an in-house hemoglobin level and they told me I'd have to taken him to the ER because the doc wouldn't see him because of his blood disorder... hmmmmmm, that doesn't sound fun... I tried calling the pediatrician on call to see what they'd recommend and they also said to take him to the ER... I didn't really want to go by myself and Nathan was 1/2 way through laying the flooring in the bathroom we're finishing (that'll be a post later on) and he couldn't really walk away from it seeing as how the epoxy was already down on the floor... when he was done, he and a friend gave Dallin a blessing. While Nathan was changing and checking the floor again, Dallin started to perk up- he was actually looking around, eyes open all the way and talking a little. I offered him some goldfish and raisins, which he accepted and then proceeded to smile and talk and act like his usual self, enough so that I decided not to take a trip to the ER that night. I called his doc this morning and they got me in first thing- Obviously I still haven't fixed my motherly intuition because *shocker* his ears were perfectly fine! His doc was concerned enough though to do some blood work- and since we had to stick him, we figured we may as well do some metabolic testing to check why he's not growing (especially since he lost 1/2 a pound in the last few weeks *sigh*) Poor little guy- he was so tough... A few minutes later (thanks to modern technology and medicine), his CBC indicated he had a viral infection of some sort, and his hemoglobin (red cell count) was at 8.3-- not good... but that doesn't mean so much without the retic count to see if he's making new red blood cells rapidly or not... Dr. Gapen said he'd call later with the retic count.... the lab didn't do the retic 'stat' so we wait til the morning to see if we have to recheck his hemoglobin tomorrow or wait til Monday- He's acted just fine today, which is a good sign- it makes me feel so much better because though 8.0 is usually the level where a transfusion is mandatory, he avoided it as a newborn because he was eating well and not lethargic, so if he continues to act like his normal self, he may not be transfused--
Sometimes ignorance is bliss- my knowledge as a nurse is often my worst enemy, but right now it's strangely comforting because I know what to watch for and what I'm not seeing gives me peace.
And so we wait...
Field Trip
On Thursday Bryson and I went to the Outdoor Learning Center with his preschool- after we got there, one of Bryson's classmates got sick.... all over the place, and apparently I was the only one with a strong enough stomach to help the mom clean up... ick. Aside from that, we had a great time- and learned so much!!

We got to see an owl up close named 'Grey'- Bryson was impressed with how far the owl could turn it's head around- we learned that they turn their head so far around because they can't move their eyes in their sockets!!

While we didn't get to touch Grey the Owl, we did get to touch an owls wing- one kid asked why the owl took it's wing off. We learned that an owl has really incredible hearing and can hear a mouse's heart beating under a foot of snow! Because an owl relies so much on his hearing, they create almost no noise when they flap their wings (as opposed to other birds, especially those with really good vision).

I love that all the boys made silly faces and the girls just smiled-

Preschool Singing Practice
I went to Bryson's preschool on Monday for 'parent updates' to discuss with the parents what the kiddo's have been working on in school- we even got to see a little concert by the kids singing some songs- it was too cute!

Bryson loved performing and took a bow after each song when the parents would clap...
